The "Fulbright House", is located in a villa in the quiet residential district of "Shmeisani", in Amman. It is ideally situated and in proximity to many shops, hotels, restaurants and public transportation.
The “Fulbright House” serves Jordanian and American Students, Scholars and Professionals.
It plays a role in announcing grants to Jordanians, and working through all the required steps, with the help of American counterparts to secure those applied for scholarships and departure details to the U.S. On the other hand, all of our American grantees to Jordan, are met and greeted upon arrival at the airport and housed temporarily at a hotel close to the Fulbright House.
The staff regularly assists its incoming Fulbrighters in securing suitable apartments and introducing them to their community.
An In-Country Orientation Week is offered, where the grantees and their families are introduced to a variety of local and international presenters, to discuss Jordanian and regional politics, economy, religion and society.
A significant amount of time is dedicated to cross-cultural discussions on Jordanian values and morals, with lectures introducing the Fulbright families to the rich and diverse touristic and archeological sites in the Kingdom.
Assistance is provided in establishing local bank accounts, identifying schools for accompanying dependents, opening local electronic mail and Internet accounts, or finding volunteer or internship opportunities.
For accompanying spouses, the staff will help in securing local, part-time job placement and, offer general information, where the grantees can avail themselves of many other local services or vendors.
The staff at the Fulbright House also provides facilitative assistance in securing the required Government of Jordan Residency and/or Work Permits and offering a listing of recommended medical care physicians or specialists, as well as any guidance regarding special medication needs.
A personal security awareness briefing is also presented complimented by a lecture by the American Embassy security staff.
American Fulbrighters are each assigned his/her own mailbox at the Fulbright House, where the mail is picked up and deposited on daily basis. Announcements of local events and activities are shared, where members of the staff will arrange and accompany the Fellows, at times, during weekends.
The Fulbright House offers its grantees and former Jordanian Fulbright alumni a location to meet informally in the Library and Board Room Lounge.
During the warmer season, the Garden with its shady grape arbor offers a relaxing site for Fulbrighters, their friends and families to meet and socialize. The Fulbright House lounge offers them the opportunity to watch video movies or avail themselves of a modest free-lending library.
Every year in late winter and spring, the Fulbright House presents a series of round-table discussions or lectures with American Fulbright Fellows and their Jordanian counterparts on a variety of topics.
Periodic "town meetings" are held with the grantees and their families and regular get-togethers are arranged to enjoy and celebrate such occasions as Thanksgiving, Christmas or Ramadan Iftars (special evening meals during the month of Ramadan).
The Commission's Fulbright House also serves as the umbrella institution for meetings or events convened by the Jordanian Alumni Society for U.S. University Graduates and for the Hubert H. Humphrey Alumni Association of Jordan.
The staff at the Fulbright House consists of an Executive Director, a Senior Program Officer, a Program Officer, two Program Associates, a Finance Manager and Administrative Assistant supported by a Driver/Messenger and Senior Office Clerk.
Everyone is committed to ensuring that each Fulbright grant recipient becomes a member of our Fulbright "family” and feels that a "home-away-from-home” is ever present from the day of their arrival in the Kingdom until they depart.
