THE 2008 FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING ASSISTANT (FLTA) PROGRAM

The Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program is an opportunity for young teachers of English to refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency and extend their knowledge of the cultures and customs of the United States while strengthening the instruction of foreign language at U.S. colleges and universities.

As a Fulbright FLTA Fellow, you will spend 9 months at a U.S. university or college and some high schools, where you will teach your language and enroll in at least two U.S. studies or teaching methodology classes each semester.

You will also share the culture and values of Jordan with Americans in university clubs, language dormitories and in the community.

When you return back to Jordan, you will have a high proficiency in English and will speak with first-hand knowledge about the United States, its culture and its people.

Teaching Assistantships are only awarded for one nine (9)-month academic year beginning in August or September.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be teachers of English or in training to become teachers of English.
  • Applicants should possess a university degree at the beginning of the program. A Master's degree is highly desirable at many U.S. institutions.
  • Fluency in English is mandatory, demonstrated by a valid and official TOEFL examination, not older than 2 years, with a minimum score of 550 or, a 213 on the CBT - Computer Based Test or a 79-80 on the new iBT - Internet-Based Test or, an overall score of 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
     
    Note: If you do not have a valid TOEFL Score to submit with your application and wish to sit for this test, please contact the AMIDEAST office (Tel. No. 586-2950) immediately to register for the next TOEFL exam, rr contact AMIDEAST to sit for the Institutional TOEFL Program (ITP) and submit this score with your application. No application will be accepted without a valid official TOEFL score (on the CBT or iBT exan formats) or an ITP score in the interim.
     
  • Applicants must hold the Jordanian Citizenship (Nationality), a valid Jordanian Passport and must have a permanent residence status in Jordan at the time of application.
  • Persons applying for or holding permanent residence in the United States are not eligible. Persons who are citizens of both Jordan and the United States are also not eligible.
     
    Note: Fulbright FLTA Fellows enter the United States on an Exchange Visitor (J-1) visa under a Department of State program and are subject to the two-year home-country residence requirement associated with the J-1 visa. FLTA Fellows must return to Jordan upon completion of the 9-month program.  Grant extension requests will not be accepted.
     
  • Sound physical and mental health: Those selected for a Fulbright grant are required to submit a Medical History and Examination Report before their grants can be finalized.
  • Applicants must demonstrate maturity, dependability, integrity and professionalism. Applicants should demonstrate leadership skills, an ability to motivate students to learn, and an interest in teaching Arabic language and culture to U.S. students. Potential candidates should have a desire to meet people and become a part of the host U.S. community by participating in community events and campus activities. FLTA Fellows should also be creative and self-reliant team players, who are able to maintain excellent relationships with U.S. faculty, staff and students.
  • Applicants should be representative and responsible citizens who can contribute to a full and fair picture of the culture of their own countries and thereby contribute to understanding between the people of the United States and Jordan.  One of the goals of the Program is to place FLTA Fellows in all 50 states and at diverse institutions. Fellows must be flexible with placements at smaller or more ethnically-diverse academic institutions.
  • They should also demonstrate the cross-cultural sensitivity and flexibility needed to adjust successfully to life in the United States. Potential applicants must be outgoing and dynamic individuals with a great sense of humor. 
  • Applicants must be between 21 and 29 years old the time of application. Dependents are not allowed to accompany FLTA Fellows on this program.
  • Preference may be given to those applicants with little or no previous experience living or studying in the United States.
  • Applicants will be considered without regard to race, religion, gender and/or physical impairment.

Application Procedures:  FLTA candidates are required to submit an On-Line Application via the On-Line Management system administered by the IIE in New York. Interested applicants should access https://apply.embark.com/student/fulbright/flta/25/

General Application Guidelines:

  • Fill in the information requested in the FUBRIGHT Application form as completely and in as much accurate detail as possible.
     
    Note: The entire application must be typed or computer-generate in English.. Use Black 10-point or larger type on all parts of the application. Handwritten applications will not be accepted.
     
  • All pages and parts of the application must be completed and returned to constitute a full dossier.
  • Make every effort, however, to limit your response to the space provided.
  • Candidates must attach complete and certified academic documents covering the entire period of study at universities or other post-secondary institutions.
  • Documents must be accompanied by complete English translations. Academic documents must consist of a certified official record (transcript) from each university or post-secondary institution listing the subjects you studied and the grades you received during each year of your enrollment.
    Include all post-secondary institutions you have attended, even those from which you did not receive a degree or diploma.
  • Letters of Reference should be written by teachers under whom you have studied or pursued research or by someone who has supervised you in work related to your proposed field of study.
     
    Note: Letters of Reference should not be written by persons related to you either by blood or marriage, or by personal friends. The letters should be written in English if possible, or accompanied by accurate translations.
     
  • All applications must include an official indicator of English language proficiency or copy of the registration ticket for the TOEFL exam by the application due date.
  • Applications must include the processing fee in the amount of $75 US made payable to the Institute of International Education (IIE) in New York.
  • Completed applications should be returned to the American Embassy in Amman to the attention of the Regional English Language Office (RELO); by 28 November 2007 in order to be considered for the academic year to begin in the U.S. in August or September of 2008. Incomplete applications cannot be considered.
  • The American Language Center's (ALC) Placement Test is scheduled for 1 December 2007.  Interviews with the selected FLTA candidates will take place on 6 December 2007.

NOTE: Successful Candidates will be notified by the American Embassy's RELO of the FLTA Awards by May 2008.
